Home Theatre Surround Sound Audio-Video Receivers Canada
AV receivers or audio-video receivers are one of the many consumer electronics components typically found within a home theatre system. Their primary purpose is to amplify sound from a multitude of possible audio sources as well as route video signals to your TV from various sources. The user may program and configure a unit to take inputs from devices such as DVD players, gaming systems, blu-ray players etc.. and easily select which source you want to route to your TV and have sound output for.
Home theatre receivers usually provide one or more decoders for sources with more than two channels of audio information. This is most common with movie soundtracks. Movie soundtracks have been provided via a number of encoded formats. The first common format was Dolby Pro Logic. This format contained a center channel and surround channel. These channels were mixed into the left and right channels using a process called matrixing. Receivers were produced with Dolby Pro Logic decoders which could separate out these two additional channels.

About Home Theater Receivers
The home theater receiver also known as the " A/V Receiver " not only provides power to the surround sound speakers, but serves as an integrated control center for all of your components ie: DVD Players, Blu-ray player, PS3, Xbox, Wii, TV, and cable box often providing both audio and video switching between the selected components.
A Home Theater Receiver provides three important functions:
1. A tuner for AM/FM radio listening; in some cases, HD or High Definition Radio, XM or Sirius Satellite Radio, or Internet Radio.
2. A Preamp that controls which audio/video source is selected (iPod, Blu Ray Player, PS3, Wii, , etc...), processes the incoming stereo/surround sound signals, and distributes audio to the specified channels and subwoofer output. Video from such components as a Blu Ray player or PS3 are routed to theLCD TV or Plasma TV.
3. A built-in Multi-channel amplifier (5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or in some cases 7.2 channels which Onkyo sells) sends the audio signals and power to the surround sound speakers.
