Liquid crystal was discovered by the Austrian botanist Fredreich Rheinizer in 1888. "Liquid crystal" is neither solid nor liquid (an example is soapy water). In the mid-1960s, scientists showed that liquid crystals when stimulated by an external electrical charge could change the properties of light passing through the crystals.
The early prototypes (late 1960s) were too unstable for mass production. But all of that changed when a British researcher proposed a stable, liquid crystal material (biphenyl). Today's color LCD TV's and Monitors have a sandwich-like structure.
What is LCD TV Technology?
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. This technology has been around for a number of years but is finally able to deliver fast motion video quality flat panel displays. The thin and light form factor is attractive to consumers. While the panel (the set itself) looks thin, the technology inside is quite extensive.
An LCD monitor is made up of pixels (picture elements). Pixels are individual, distinct, points of light. Each pixel is made up of sub pixels consisting of red, green and blue. Together the red, green and blue sub pixels combine to form a single color picture element. A panel's resolution is determined in part by how many pixels there are. A display can have hundreds of thousands of points of light (pixels) to millions of points of light, depending on the resolution.

LCD TVs are color television sets that use LCD technology to produce images. LCD TVs are thinner and lighter than CRT televisions of similar display size, and are available in much larger sizes as well. This combination of features made the LCD TV more practical than CRTs for many roles. The LCD TV can be wall mounted, sit on a tv stand taking up much less space then a CRT and the LCD TV is much lighter in weight.
In 2007, LCD Televisions surpassed sales of CRT televisions worldwide for the first time, and its sales figures relative to other technologies is accelerating. The Flat Panel LCD TV is, by far, the most widely produced and sold television technology today.
